Crochet sunflower granny square

This crochet sunflower granny square reminds me of Spring and Summer breeze. Compare to the wild daisy granny square, this pattern is a bit complicated since you have to crochet more petals with slip stitches. However, who doesn’t love to add a little sunshine on a fresh project.

Materials: (I used)
5mm crochet hook
Worsted weight yarn: yellow, brown, green and dark green
Scissors
Yarn needle

Abbreviations

Note: I used chainless starting dc/tr for every first dc of each round instead of ch3/ ch4. There’s another good crochet technique to use is ch2/ ch3 then dc/ tr into same stitch ( counted as 1st dc/ tr ). In the pattern below you’ll see I simply state dc/ tr into 1st stitch for every first dc/ tr of each round, so just choose your best technique ?

This pattern is crocheted continually from flower to the square bed. Use any hook size you want for a bigger or smaller square, just choose a yarn type that matches. Steam block your finished squares.

Skill level: Intermediate

Pattern:

Flower: (Pic no.1 and 2)

Start with brown yarn to make flower’s pistil part.

R1: Form a magic ring, 12 dc into ring, total 12 dc, sl into 1st to join.

R2: inc dc into every st around, total 24 sts, sl into 1st to join.

R3: Change to yellow yarn, crochet all sts into front – loop only *ch5, sl into 2nd ch from hook, sc into next ch, 2 hdc across, sl into next st* repeat ** 24 times around. You’ll have total 24 petals ( fasten off )

Square bed: (Pic no. 3,4,5,6)

R1: Work into back – loop behind the flower. Use green yarn, join yarn into any back – loop st, tr into 1st stitch, 2 dc into same st, ch1, skip 1 st, 3 dc into next st, ch1, skip 1 st, 2 dc into next st, tr into same st, ch3, skip 1 st * tr into next st, 2 dc into same st, ch1, skip 1 st, 3 dc into next st, ch1, skip 1 st,  2 dc into next st, tr into same st, ch3, skip 1 st* repeat ** 3 times. Sl into 1st st to join.

R2: dc into 1st stitch, ch1,  *( 3 dc into next ch1-space , ch1) x 2 times, 3 dc into next ch3-space, ch3, 3 dc into same space, ch1.* repeat ** 3 times. ( 3 dc into next ch1-space , ch1) x 2 times, 3 dc into next ch3-space , ch3, 2 dc into same space, sl into 1st st to join.

R3: Change to dark green yarn, dc into 1st stitch, 2 dc into next ch1-space, ch1, (3 dc into next ch1-space , ch1) x 2 times, 3 dc into next ch3-space , ch3, 3 dc into same space, *(ch1, 3 dc into next ch1-space) x 3 times, ch1, 3 dc into next ch3-space, ch3, 3dc into same space* repeat ** 3 times, ch1, sl into 1st st to join. (fasten off and weave in end ).

This sunflower granny square is a little bigger than the wild daisy granny square. So … I created another daisy granny square with the same size. It’s a big daisy not a little wild daisy on a green square bed. Simply crochet ch6 instead of ch4 for each petals.

With white yarn, crochet all into front – loop only * ch6, sc into 2nd ch from hook, hdc across, sl into next st* repeat ** 12 times around.

The square bed is exactly the same as Wild daisy granny square plus 1 more round of granny square crochet.

See, same size they are. 3D daisy and sunflower granny squares 🙂

Happy crocheting xD
