Crochet Turning Leaves poncho

Finally, the season of fashionable outer garments. My crochet design for this Fall is a versatile poncho to add to the Turning Leaves crochet patterns collection. It can be worn as a skirt with a string around the waist.

Materials: ( I used )
3mm crochet hook
Sport weight yarn: orange ( about 500 gr for the sample – size XL and 2XL / 50 gr or 136 yds per skein )

Abbreviations

Note: I used chainless starting dc for every first dc of each row/ round instead of ch 3. There’s another good crochet technique to use is ch 2, dc into the same stitch ( counted as 1st dc). In the pattern below you’ll see I simply state dc into 1st stitch for every first dc of each row/ round, so choose your best technique 🙂

Special stitch used:

V stitch ( dc, ch 1, dc into same stitch or space )

2dc – V stitch ( 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc into same stitch or space )

This crochet Turning Leaves poncho pattern fits size XL/ 2XL ( chest size: 40 to 46 inches )

Skill level: Intermediate

Gauge:  12 double crochet stitches x 4 rows = approximately 2 inches ( with materials indicated )

R1: Ch275, dc into 3rd ch from hook ( first 2 ch doesn’t count as 1st dc ), 2 dc into same st, dc in each of next 2 sts, ch1,  skip 5 chs, *2 dc – V stitch into next ch, ch1, skip 5 chs, dc in each of next 2 chs, ( 2dc, ch2, 2dc) into next ch, dc in each of next 2 chs, ch1, skip 5 chs* repeat ** 16 times across, 2 dc – V stitch into next ch, ch1, skip 5 chs, dc in each of next 2 sts, 3 dc into the last ch, turn.

R2: 3 dc into first st, dc in each of next 3 sts, skip 1 st, ch1, skip next ch1-space and 2 sts, *V stitch into next ch1-space, skip 2 sts and next ch1-space, ch1, skip 1 st, dc in each of next 3 sts, ( 2dc, ch2, 2dc) into next ch2-space, dc in each of next 3 sts, skip 1 st, ch1, skip next ch1-space and 2 sts* repeat ** 16 times across, V stitch into next ch1-space, skip 2 sts and next ch1-space, ch1, skip 1 st, dc in each of next 3 sts, 3 dc into last st, turn.

Repeat ( from R3 to R14 ) x  3 times until you reach R50 ( fasten off ).

From R1 of both pieces, seam shoulder lines with sc or sl ( 15 inches on each side ).

 

Collar: ( work in rounds )

From the right side, join yarn and insert the hook into any st of the neckline.

R1: dc around, sl in 1st stitch to join.

R2: fpdc around 1st stitch, bpdc around next stitch, * fpdc around next stitch, bpdc around next stitch * repeat ** around, sl in 1st stitch to join.

R3 to R15: same as R2 ( fasten off ).

Weave in ends.

Drawstring: ( use a bigger hook )

Hold 4 strands of yarn together, and crochet a chain of 60 inches for the drawstring cord. Thread around R1 or R15 of the collar part.
